LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -Â UNLV women's tennis senior Aiwen Zhu has been named the DC Solar Outstanding Rebel of the Week, the school announced Wednesday.
The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.
Zhu, from Wuxi, China, went a combined 5-1 in singles and doubles over the weekend at the elite Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships, hosted by UNLV. In singles play, she upset No. 49 Anna Turati of Texas, 6-3, 7-5 before falling in the quarterfinals. In the doubles competition, she and partner
En-Pei Huang went 3-0 to give UNLV its first singles or doubles title at the event's 17-year history. Zhu and Huang downed a duo from Texas on Friday, upset No. 43 duo from Pepperdine on Saturday and finished off another Longhorn team on Sunday to take the historic crown. The same Pepperdine team that UNLV defeated shocked two top-10 teams during the event.
For her performance, Zhu was named Mountain West Player of the Week for the seventh time in her career.
Zhu and the Rebels begin the dual season this weekend at the ITA Kickoff Weekend event in Malibu, California, opening the two-day tournament against host Pepperdine Saturday morning.
