Rebels Tied For Third After First Round Of Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown

UNLV women's golf freshman Elina Saksa shot 3-under 69 Sunday to take individual lead in Boulder City.

BOULDER CITY, Nev. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's golf team shot 13-over-par 301 during the first round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, which is being hosted by the Rebels at Boulder Creek Golf Club (par 72, 6,277 yards).

The Rebels are tied for third with Long Beach State, five shots back of team-leading San Francisco (+8). South Dakota State is one shot back in second at 9-over, while Fresno State rounds out the top five at 18-over.

Individually, UNLV freshman Elina Saksa holds a one-shot lead at 3-under 69. Fresno State's Brigitte Thibault is in second at 2-under.

There are a total of 18 teams and 96 individuals competing.
 
STAT OF THE DAY: Only four individuals recorded rounds under par.

REBEL OF THE DAY: Saksa's round consisted of seven birdies and four bogeys.

NEXT FOR THE REBELS: The tournament's second round will take place on Monday, Oct. 28, with the final round scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 29. Both days will feature shotgun starts at 8 a.m.

NOTABLE:
• This is UNLV's final tournament of the fall.
• The Rebels have a new look with just three returners from last year's roster. Six new faces have joined the 2019-20 squad.
• Prior to the 2018-19 season, UNLV had won three straight Mountain West titles and made a NCAA postseason appearance in 16 consecutive years.
• Head coach Amy Bush-Herzer is in her ninth year at the helm of the program. She has led her team to a conference championship four times.
