Rebels Take Lead On Second Day Of Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown

UNLV women's golf freshman Elina Saksa also increased her individual lead to four shots with second-round 1-under Monday in Boulder City.

BOULDER CITY, Nev. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's golf team shot a second-round-low 3-over-par 291 Monday and took over the team lead at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, which is being hosted by the Rebels at Boulder Creek Golf Club (par 72, 6,277 yards).

UNLV has a 36-hole total of 16-over 592 and leads the tournament by seven shots. South Dakota State and San Francisco are both tied for second at 23-over, while Long Beach State is fourth at 26-over, and Oral Roberts and Fresno State round out the top five in a tie for fifth at 30-over.

Individually, UNLV freshman Elina Saksa shot a second-round 1-under 71 to remain in the lead, increasing her advantage to four shots. Saksa is at 4-under for the tournament, while there is a three-way tie for second at even par between San Francisco's Samantha Gong, East Tennessee State's Tereza Melecka and South Dakota State's Teresa Toscano.

There are a total of 18 teams and 96 individuals competing. 

STAT OF THE DAY: Saksa is the only player under par for the tournament.

REBEL OF THE DAY: Saksa's second round consisted of six birdies and two bogeys before triple-bogeying her last hole of the round (the par-4 third).

NEXT FOR THE REBELS: The tournament's final round will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 29, with a shotgun start scheduled for 8 a.m.

• UNLV has won this event three times in its history (since 2002) and as recently as 2017.
• This is UNLV's final tournament of the fall.
• The Rebels have a new look with just three returners from last year's roster. Six new faces have joined the 2019-20 squad.
• Prior to the 2018-19 season, UNLV had won three straight Mountain West titles and made a NCAA postseason appearance in 16 consecutive years.
• Head coach Amy Bush-Herzer is in her ninth year at the helm of the program. She has led her team to a conference championship four times.
