LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -- The UNLV men's tennis team posted an impressive combined mark of 12-2 in singles play during Friday's opening day of the annual Larry Easley Memorial Classic at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Â
Players from six other western programs are competing in the individual event with competitors from UCLA, SMU, Gonzaga, Cal Poly, San Diego State and Loyola Marymount.
Â
Top-seeded
Alex Kobelt, ranked 113th in the nation, led the way for the hosts, downing LMU's Diego Nava 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinal round after a first-round bye. Joining him in the semifinals of the top flight is teammate
Jordan Sauer, who rallied to upset fourth-seeded Connor Rapp of UCLA, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, after getting by Gonzaga's Matthew Hollingworth earlier in the day, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
Â
Also winning twice to reach the semifinals for UNLV were
Clayton Alenik,
Milos Dabic and
Anton Ornberg in Flight Two while
Zach Garner and
Jackson Atherton are still alive in Flight Three.
Â
In doubles play, the Rebels split their two matches on Friday. Saturday's action begins with quarterfinal doubles. Admission is free of charge.
Â
The annual event was renamed in 2010 in honor of UNLV Hall of Famer Larry Easley, who passed away from illness in 2005 at the age of 57. Easley coached the UNLV men's tennis team longer than anyone in history and produced sometimes-spectacular results over his dozen seasons from 1993-2002, including producing five All-Americans and two NCAA individual champions.
