LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV junior running back
Charles Williams, who is just the fourth Rebel to lead a conference in rushing yards during the regular season, was named First Team All-Mountain West on Wednesday as the league announced its annual postseason awards.
Joining Williams on the 2019 list was senior cornerback
Jericho Flowers, who earned Second Team, and four Rebels who garnered Honorable Mention All-MW: OL
Julio Garcia II, LB
Rayshad Jackson, OL
Justin Polu and LB
Javin White.
Williams (Fresno, CA/Bullard HS) is the fourth UNLV running back to be named First Team All-MW, joining
Lexington Thomas in 2017,
Dominique Dorsey in 2004 and
Jeremi Rudolph in 2000. His net total of 1,257 yards during the regular season is the seventh-most in school history, led the Mountain West and currently ranks 16th in the nation. Williams joins former UNLV backs Dorsey (2004),
Ickey Woods (1987) and
Kirk Jones (1984) as a conference regular-season rushing champion. The Chuck Wagon moved into seventh place on UNLV's career rushing list (2,445) and his six 100-yard games this fall gave him nine in his career, which ties for seventh in Rebel history. Williams went for a career-high 186 yards in UNLV's win over San Jose State in the home finale and sprinted for a career-long 80-yard run for a touchdown in last week's victory at UNR. His 11 rushing touchdowns ranked second in the MW and tied for sixth in UNLV history.
Flowers (Los Angeles, CA/Hamilton HS) is the first UNLV defensive back to earn first or second team All-MW since UCLA transfer
Mil'Von James was a second-teamer in 2007. Flowers finished fifth on the team and 31st in the MW with a career-high 68 total tackles, including 3.0 tackles-for-loss, to go with one quarterback sack and one fumble recovery. He finished third in the league with 16 passes defended and tied for 14th in the nation with a career-high four interceptions. Flowers was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 25 after helping his team defeat San Jose State.
UNLV's six overall selections tied with 2016's squad for the most by the program since its most recent bowl season in 2013.
Senior offensive lineman Polu (Henderson, NV/Silverado HS), who started all 48 games of his collegiate career, earned honorable mention for the second consecutive season and was joined by linemate and fellow local, Garcia (Las Vegas/Bishop Gorman HS) after both helped produce the conference rushing champion. It marked the fourth straight year that two Rebel offensive linemen made the team and 11th straight season that at least one UNLV blocker was included on the league's honors list.
UNLV had more than one linebacker included for the first time since 2004 as team captain White (Oakland, CA/McClymonds HS), who also saw action at safety and cornerback, was all over the field again while posting 79 tackles, 8.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks, three interceptions, 11 pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He was named MW Defensive Player of the Week after a victory at Vanderbilt in October. White was joined by Jackson (Miami, FL/Norland HS), a graduate transfer from the University of Florida who joined the squad during fall camp and did not disappoint in his one season as a Rebel. Jackson ranked fifth in the MW and 45th in the nation with 99 total tackles while finishing second in the conference with 14 TFL to go with 2.0 sacks, four pass breakups and a pair of forced fumbles.
