Smith-Barnett Named MW's Track Athlete Of The Week

Senior sprinter clocked a time of 7.20 to win the 60m at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic; her third win of the year.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV track & field's Destiny Smith-Barnett was named the Mountain West's Track Athlete of the Week after her win in the 60m Saturday at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic in Albuquerque, N.M.
 
Smith-Barnett's time of 7.20 was .01 seconds faster than her closest competitor, runner-up Kortnei Johnson from LSU, and it was her third victory in as many races.
 
"Destiny is an amazing athlete and is coming into her own as an elite sprinter," said head coach Yvonne Wade. "It's very exciting to see her grow and gain that confidence to compete against the best because she is one of the best."
 
The native of Oakland, California. ranks first overall in the Mountain West and third in the NCAA standings with a time of 7.17 notched at Northern Arizona's Lumberjack Team Challenge in mid-January. Additionally, Smith-Barnett is tied for sixth in the IAAF world indoor rankings.
 
Smith-Barnett was previously named the MW's Track Athlete of the Week on Jan. 22.
 
NEXT TIME OUT: The Rebels will split up this week (Feb. 8-9) with some members of the team returning to Albuquerque for the UNM Don Kirby Invitational, while others will travel to Seattle for Washington's Husky Invitational.
 
ALL-COMERS MEET: The UNLV track & field program will host its second All-Comers Meets at Myron Partridge Stadium & Sheila Tarr-Smith Field on Feb. 16. Participants (open to the public) can enter the meet for $5 for one event or $10 for two or more. Spectators are $5. Action begins at 9:30 am with the shot put and concludes at 12:50 pm with the 4x400m relay.
