BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV senior
Destiny Smith-Barnett will have a chance to compete for a national title Saturday after she clocked a time of 7.25 in the 60m prelims at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday. The native of Oakland, California, advanced to the event final after she ran the fifth-fastest time out of 16 competitors at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Smith-Barnett as well as Texas' Teahna Daniels (7.23), Florida State's Ka'Tia Seymour (7.24), Kentucky's Kianna Gray (7.26) and Arkansas' Kiara Parker (7.27) qualified out of the second heat, while LSU's Kortnei Johnson (7.15) and Sha'Carri Richardson (7.22), and USC's Twanisha Terry (7.26) came out of the first heat.
NOTES:
- Smith-Barnett is attempting to join UNLV Hall-of-Famers Sheila Tarr (1984 Outdoor: Heptathlon) and Trena Hull (1987 Indoor: 1000m) as the only Rebels who have won national championships for the track & field program.
- This is the third straight year that UNLV will be represented at the NCAA Indoor Championships, as Smith-Barnett and teammate
Avi'Tal Wilson-Perteete earned Second Team USTFCCCA All-America honors in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
-Smith-Barnett and Parker were tied for second in the NCAA with a time of 7.15 entering the national meet, while Johnson was first at 7.14.
SWITCHING SEASONS: The UNLV track & field team will transition to the outdoor season following the conclusion of the NCAA Indoor Championships. The Rebels open the outdoor campaign at home on March 14-16 with the UNLV Invitational & Sheila Tarr-Smith Multis at Myron Partridge Stadium.
