Rebels Begin Road Trip With A Stop In Phoenix

UNLV baseball travels to Phoenix to face Grand Canyon Tuesday, plays three at Air Force this weekend.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV Rebels hit the road this week with four games in the Mountain Time Zone, marking the first contests the squad will play this season outside of Nevada and California. The Rebels begin the trip with a midweek contest in Phoenix against the Grand Canyon Lopes Tuesday afternoon (2:00 pm). The road swing continues Friday through Sunday in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with three games in Mountain West play against the Air Force Falcons.

The Scarlet & Gray just completed a season-long, nine game homestand over a two-week period that saw the team win six of those outings, with three of those coming last week. UNLV claimed both midweek, nonconference affairs against UC Riverside and then won once in the conference series against New Mexico.

GCU has turned things around in its last 11 contests with nine wins against two losses after it began the year 6-10. The Lopes have used a five-game win streak and a four-game run to currently sit at 15-12. Both of the recent losses fell in between the two winning stretches. Moreover, the Lopes have won all four of their current streak on the road at UNR (March 27: 8-2) and at Utah Valley (March 29: 9-4; March 30: 11-4; March 31: 14-4).

Historically speaking, UNLV and GCU have squared off a total of 39 times with the first meeting taking place in Las Vegas in 1967. The Rebels own a four-game lead in the head-to-head series, notching 21 wins to 17 losses and one tie. The Lopes won both meetings last year in Phoenix (April 3: 5-3; April 4: 10-6) and has been victorious in three of the last four.

FOLLOW ALONG: Fans can follow Tuesday's nonconference game between UNLV and Grand Canyon through live stats, video and Twitter (@UNLVbaseball). The game will be streamed live via GCU's YouTube channel. Links for live stats and video can be found at UNLVRebels.com.

ON DECK: UNLV stays on the road and travels to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to face Air Force this weekend. The Rebels and Falcons three-game, Mountain West series runs Friday (2:00 pm PT), Saturday (12:00 pm PT) and Sunday (11:00 am PT).

HITTIN' THE ROAD: UNLV has only played nine games away from Las Vegas and Earl E. Wilson Stadium, thus far, this season. Now that the calendar has turned to April, the Scarlet & Gray's schedule will become more road heavy. The Rebels will play 15 of 26 outside of Southern Nevada from April 2 through May 12. The road swing begins this week in Arizona and Colorado against Grand Canyon and New Mexico, respectively. The Rebels will also take trips to Reno, Phoenix (Arizona State), Riverside (UC Riversdie), Houston (Houston) and Albuquerque (New Mexico) through mid-May.

BACK AT EARL E: Following its swing through the Grand Canyon and Centennial States, UNLV will return home to host five straight against the likes of Arizona State, San Jose State and Grand Canyon. ASU, which is mentioned in all six top-25 polls and is ranked as high as No. 2 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, travels to Las Vegas for a Tuesday night affair (6:05 pm). SJSU will follow for three over the April 12-14 weekend, while GCU completes the home-and-home series on April 16 (2:05 pm).

WEEKLY AWARD SWEEP: For the second straight week, UNLV baseball's Jack-Thomas Wold and Ryan Hare were named the Mountain West's Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Monday's announcement by the conference office marks the third instance that Hare has been recognized for his performance on the mound this season, while it's the second for Wold.

Wold and Hare are the first teammates to sweep the MW's weekly awards in back-to-back weeks in the Conference's 20-year history.

Hare, a redshirt junior from Lakewood, California, earned the win over the New Mexico Lobos Saturday, combining with reliever Conner Woods on the one-hit shutout. The right-hander carried a no-hit bid into the ninth inning, but came up one out shy, allowing a two-out single to the 30th batter he faced. He struck out a career-best nine batters and recorded 10 fly outs and eight groundouts. During the affair, he retired eight and 18 straight batters with one walk falling between the two stretches.

Additionally, Hare joins David Seccombe as the only Rebels to be selected the conference's pitcher of the week three times in one season. Seccombe accomplished the feat in 2004.

Wold, a sophomore from Henderson, hit .421 over the five-game week, with eight hits, eight runs and seven RBI. He had three multiple-hit and multiple-run games and two multiple-RBI games. Defensively, he was perfect in the field in 51 chances, recording 49 putouts and two assists.

Moreover, Wold is the 10th Rebel to earn the MW Player of the Week award a minimum of two times in one season, joining Trent Kitsch (2000), Brent Johnson (2002), Eric Nielsen (2004), Chris Bonnell (2005), Keith Smith (2006), Xavier Scruggs (2008 – three times), Travis Feiner (2011), Rance Roundy (2011) and Nick Rodriguez (2018).

In a two-game, midweek sweep of UC Riverside, Wold hit .500 with three hits, four runs and three RBI. He scored twice in each contest, and produced a game-tying RBI in game one when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

In the three-game, MW series against New Mexico, he hit .384 with five hits, four runs and five RBI. In the opener, he was involved in both first-inning scores for UNLV with an RBI single and a run. In game two, he had a hand in the team's first four runs, hitting a two-run homer in the first and then scoring in the fourth and eighth. In the series finale, he had two hits and an RBI.
