LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's basketball welcomed its latest addition as Delyanie Bryne has signed to play for the Lady Rebels, head coach Kathy Olivier announced Friday. Bryne spent last season as a freshman at Minnesota and will sit out the 2019-20 season due to NCAA transfer rules before suiting up for the Lady Rebels starting in 2020-21. She will have three years of eligibility for the Scarlet and Gray.
A 6-2 forward and native of Arvada, Colorado, Byrne appeared in 17 games for the Golden Gophers. She posted career-highs of six points and three rebounds in a contest against Coppin State (Dec. 12), and finished her freshman season with 16 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks and five steals.
Byrne, the 19th-ranked forward by ESPN in her class, led the state in scoring with 19 points and added a team-high 7.4 rebounds per contest as a senior for Ralston Valley High in 2017-18 despite battling through injuries in the final third of the season. She still helped the Mustangs to the quarterfinals of the state playoffs in what was her only season with the school, and was one of five players named All-Colorado by the Denver Post. Byrne played her first two years at Broomfield HS, where she averaged 13.6 ppg and 6.7 rpg as a sophomore. She was also a member of the BC Denver team, one of the top AAU squads in the state of Colorado.
"We wanted Delaynie from the beginning," said Olivier. "She came to our Lady Rebel Elite Camp and was a top recruit out of high school. She has a great three-point shot, she rebounds and is an excellent student. She's an overachiever and a total winner and is a great addition to our program."
Byrne is the first Lady Rebel to hail from the state of Colorado since Denali Murnan (2012-14), who was also a native of Arvada who joined the team as a two-sport star in her sophomore year after coming to Las Vegas on a soccer scholarship for the Rebels.
Byrne is also the seventh member of the 2019-20 Lady Rebel recruiting class, all of whom come from seven different states: Melanie Isbell (Las Vegas), Tianna Carter (Tucson, Arizona), Keyana Wilfred (Mitchell, Nebraska), Isis Beh (Murray, Utah), Anna Blount (Stockton, California) and Jacinta Buckley (Spokane, Washington).
