Rebels Begin Homestand With Visit From Sun Devils

UNLV baseball hosts No. 9 Arizona State at Earl E. Wilson Stadium Tuesday evening.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV Rebels return to Las Vegas this week to begin a five-game homestand at Earl E. Wilson Stadium with a contest against the nationally ranked Arizona State Sun Devils Tuesday evening (6:05 pm). The Scarlet & Gray will also welcome the San Jose State Spartans and Grand Canyon Lopes to town starting Friday.

UNLV (19-15) and ASU (21-4) enter the midweek affair coming off road victories Sunday at Air Force and USC, respectively. The Rebels won two of three in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in Mountain West play, while the Sun Devils went 1-2 in Los Angeles in Pac-12 competition.

Additionally, the Sun Devils, who began the year with 21 straight wins, have worked their way into every major collegiate top-25 poll and sit at No. 9 in both the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and USA Today Polls. They are also No. 13 in Baseball America and D1Baseball.com, and No. 14 in the NCBWA weekly rankings. They were ranked as high as No. 2 last week in the CBN poll, but a 1-3 week in California dropped them seven spots.

Tuesday's affair is the first between UNLV and ASU this season, as the squads will close out their home-and-home series in Phoenix on April 23 (6:30 pm).

Historically speaking, UNLV and Arizona State have squared off a total of 83 times with the first meeting taking place in Tempe in 1974. The Sun Devils hold a 63-19-1 overall mark in the series; however, the Rebels have won the last three contests and five of the last eight dating back to 2015. The Scarlet & Gray claimed both meetings last year by 10-3 and 14-6 scores on March 20 (Tempe) and April 10 (Las Vegas), respectively.

ON DECK: Following its tussle with the Sun Devils, UNLV continues its homestand with three Mountain West contests against San Jose State over the weekend. Friday and Saturday's games are slated to begin at 6:05 pm, while Sunday's finale is set for 1:05 pm. The Rebels and GCU Lopes will close out their home-and-home series on April 16 (3:05 pm).

HITTIN' THE ROAD: UNLV has now played 13 games away from Las Vegas and Earl E. Wilson Stadium, thus far, this season. As the calendar turned to April, the Scarlet & Gray's schedule became more road heavy, with the Rebels playing 15 of their final 26 outside of Southern Nevada from April 2 through May 12. The road swing began last week in Arizona against Grand Canyon and continued with three at Air Force in Colorado over the weekend. The Rebels will also take trips to Reno, Phoenix (Arizona State), Riverside (UC Riverside), Houston (Houston) and Albuquerque (New Mexico) through mid-May.
