LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's soccer head coach
Chris Shaw revealed the Rebels' 2019 fall schedule Thursday, which features 20 regular season games - 10 at Peter Johann Memorial Field and 10 on the road. UNLV will face a challenging non-conference slate with five consecutive road games, including a trip to the East Coast for the Duke Classic, where the Rebels will take on both Duke and North Carolina in the tournament before heading to the Lone Star State for a tilt with Texas A&M the following weekend.
"Overall I feel that this is the toughest schedule that we have faced in my time at UNLV," said Shaw. "On the road to UNC, Duke, and Texas A&M is really going to test the mettle of the team. However, the team is excited about facing some the of the best competition in the country and we know that those games will help to prepare us for the competitive Mountain West games."
The three Power Five opponents are the most the Scarlet and Gray have faced since they took on four during non-league play in 2009, while it is just the eighth time in 22 seasons of Rebel women's soccer that they will face more than two Power Five opponents in the same season. UNLV and Duke will be meeting for the second time after the two teams played to a double overtime draw in 2009 and it will be the first-ever meetings between UNLV and UNC and UNLV and Texas A&M.
North Carolina reached the NCAA National Championship game last fall, falling1-0 to national champion Florida State, while Duke finished the 2018 season ranked 10th in the country after reaching the NCAA round of 16. Texas A&M also ranked in the top 25 in the country during the 2018 season and qualified for its 24th consecutive NCAA Tournament, ending the season in the round of 16.
The Rebels will open the season at home for the third straight year, taking on CSU Northridge on Thursday, August 22. UNLV will then hit the road for the next three weekends, beginning with matches in Southern California at Cal Baptist and CSU Bakersfield on Friday, August 30 and Sunday, September 1, respectively. The next weekend the Rebels will be in North Carolina for a Thursday, September 5 match with Duke and a Sunday, September 8 showdown with UNC. The road trip will wrap up Sunday, September 15 at Texas A&M in Texas Station.
UNLV returns home Friday, September 20 to take on Northern Arizona and will conclude the weekend with a Sunday, September 22 game against Utah Valley in its final non-conference tilt before the Mountain West slate begins.
The Rebels kick off league play with a home-road split, hosting Utah State Friday, September 27 in their conference home opener before heading to north to face defending Mountain West champion Boise State on Sunday, September 29. The following weekend, the Rebels will stay on the road with matches at San Diego State on Friday, October 4 and at New Mexico Sunday, October 6.
After New Mexico, UNLV will be back in the friendly confines of Peter Johann Memorial Field for six of its last eight games, beginning with matches against Air Force and Colorado State on Friday, October 11 and Sunday, October 13, respectively. UNLV will then head to Northern California for its final road trip of 2019 with games at San Jose State (Thursday, October 17) and Fresno State (Sunday, October 20).
The final four-game homestand begins with a Friday, October 25 match against Wyoming followed by a Sunday, October 27 game against Colorado State. Mountain West play wraps up Friday, November 1 with the annual Silver State Showdown against UNR. The rivalry game usually concludes the regular season, but in 2019 the Rebels will finish out with a final non-conference match on Sunday, November 3 hosting Southern Utah on Senior Day.
The Rebels will return six regular starters from a 2018 squad that went 11-6-3 and finished in a tie for sixth in conference standings.
