Scarlet & Gray Awards Handed Out In Style

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -- Mariena Hayden from volleyball and Shintaro Ban of men's golf led a group of student-athletes recognized at the inaugural UNLV Scarlet & Gray Awards event, which was held at the MGM Grand Conference Center Monday night.
 
Hayden was named the Mehdi Bouras Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year while Ban was tabbed the Mehdi Bouras Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The award is named in honor of the memory of the late UNLV tennis star Mehdi Bouras who passed away suddenly in 2013 at the age of 24.
 
Hayden, out of Belle Plaine, Minnesota, is a sophomore majoring in criminal justice. She boasts a 3.38 grade point average and guided the Rebels to the semifinals of the 2018 National Invitational Volleyball Championship and a 22-win campaign. She earned 2018 All-Mountain West Team honors after being named the league's player of the week three times. The outside hitter led the nation in aces and aces-per-set and finished second overall in points.
 
Ban already earned his bachelor's degree in economics with a GPA of 3.39. The native of San Jose, California, was named PING First Team All-America last season and was a finalist for the 2018 Division I Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award. The 2018 MW Player of the Year finished 21st at the NCAA Championship after winning four individual titles, which tied a UNLV record.



 
A total of 136 student-athletes were honored for earning academic all-conference honors by achieving GPAs of 3.0 or higher in the Mountain West and the Western Athletic Conference (men's soccer and men's swimming & diving), while 50 student-athletes were recognized for being named to the MW's Scholar-Athlete Award list for having a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater in at least two semesters at UNLV.
 
Also, a total of 50 individuals were honored as members of the Rebel Top 10 for attaining a GPA placing them in the top-10 percent of all student-athletes at UNLV. The award is based on cumulative GPA's of all student-athletes who have completed one full academic year at UNLV.
 
Also announced at the banquet were the Student-Athlete Academic Champions awards, which are given to each sport's most well-rounded leaders that demonstrate great academic achievement in addition to maintaining a productive role in their respective sport. Athletic Academic Advisors select each sport's academic champion based off the following criteria: GPA, degree path, credit load, academic class standing, contribution to their sport, community service and character.
 
Other honors, voted on by the student-athletes, included Outstanding Team (track & field), Best Upset (football vs. UNR), the Perseverance Award (football player Ty'Jason Roberts) and Heart of a Rebel Award (Lady Rebel Nikki Wheatley).

Outstanding Team: Track & Field, which won the 2018 Indoor Mountain West Championship for the first time
 
Heart of a Rebel: Nikki Wheatley (women's basketball)
 
Academic Career Breakthrough Award: Myranda Bueno (softball) and Kris Clyburn (men's basketball)
