LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Former UNLV women's basketball and track & field star LeAnn (Kazmer) Golembiewski recently lost a long battle with cancer as she passed away Saturday at the age of 45.
Golembiewski transferred to UNLV from Orange Coast College for the 1994-95 season, and played two seasons for the Lady Rebels. She averaged double-figures both seasons for UNLV, including 11.5 ppg her senior year which ranked second on the squad, and paced the Lady Rebels in both rebounding (6.9 rpg) and steals (0.5 spg) in 1995-96 as well. Her career field goal percentage of 52.6% over her two seasons still ranks sixth all-time in program history, while her 57% season percentage in 1994-95 is the fifth-highest in school history, as well as the highest of any Lady Rebel since that season. Her senior season, she was the recipient of the Bert Leavitt Memorial Scholarship, which was presented prior to the start of each season to a member of the Lady Rebels.
The Hartland, Wisconsin native shined on the track & field squad as well, as she claimed the 1995 Big West high jump title. Her personal best jump that season of 5-7 still ranks in the top-10 in the UNLV record books.
Golembiewski was a star in both sports at OCC as well, earning Co-Orange Empire Conference MVP honors in 1993-94 while helping the Pirates to their first-ever appearance in the CCCAA Final Four. The team would go 49-19 during her two years in Costa Mesa, California, and she made her mark on their record book as well, currently ranking in the top-five in a season for points, scoring average, rebounds and rebound average. She was named to the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2006.
Her husband, Gus Golembiewski, is setting up a scholarship fund in her name at Marian Central Catholic High School in Woodstock, IL where their two kids, A.J. and Jena, attend school.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the LeAnn Golembiewski Memorial Scholarship Fund. This scholarship will be awarded annually to a Marian Central Catholic High School female student-athlete.
