LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -- The Mountain West regular-season and tournament champion UNLV women's tennis squad has again earned the designation of Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team while an impressive six individuals were named an ITA Scholar-Athlete for 2019.
Â
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any school that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above. Head Coach Kevin Cory's program has reached that milestone in 16 of the last 18 seasons.
Â
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must be a letterwinner, have a GPA of at least 3.50 for the current academic year, and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters. Earning that standing this year were sophomore Izumi Asano, junior En-Pei Huang, senior Jovana Kenic, junior Samantha Li, freshman Connie Li and two-time Mountain West Player of the Year senior Aiwen Zhu.
Â
Those six were earlier announced as part of a group of an eye-popping seven UNLV women's players to earn 2019 Academic All-Mountain West honors. They were joined on that list by senior Anna Bogoslavets, who, along with Zhu, earned the award for the fourth time. To be eligible for selection to the Academic All-MW Team, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.
Â
Four of those same players – Huang, Kenic, Samantha Li and Zhu -- also earned the even more impressive designation of Mountain West Scholar-Athlete, which goes to those with a cumulative GPA or 3.5 or better. Zhu earned the honor for the fourth time as a Rebel.
