LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Former UNLV and Arena Football League star Randy Gatewood will serve as honorary captain and represent his decade's players during Saturday's '90s Night as part of the athletic department's ongoing Sam Boyd Stadium Farewell celebration.
The Rebels host No. 15 Boise State at 7:30 p.m. on what will also serve as Heroes Night.
UNLV Athletics announced a celebration of the final year of football at Sam Boyd Stadium that includes special features, giveaways and fans' favorite memories throughout the historic season. The Sam Boyd Stadium Farewell campaign, which features a unique logo and uses the hashtag #SBSFarewell, was launched to help Rebel fans unite around the 49th and final season of their off-campus home that opened in 1971. The department is celebrating the stadium's history during the final six home games before UNLV football moves to the state-of-the-art, $2 billion Las Vegas Stadium currently under construction closer to campus.
As part of #SBSFarewell, a guest former Rebel great represents all the players from their respective decade while serving as honorary captain during the pregame coin toss. Gatewood, a native of Wichita Falls, Texas, and transfer from Tyler Junior College, played two seasons in Las Vegas and not only helped UNLV win a Big West Conference crown and Las Vegas Bowl championship, but he also set two major NCAA records on Sept. 17, 1994, when he caught 23 passes (since tied by Tyler Jones of Eastern Michigan in 2008) for 363 yards (since broken) vs. Idaho.
Nicknamed Randy "Record Holder," Gatewood finished his senior season with a school-record 88 receptions for 1,203 yards and still ranks fourth at the program with eight career 100-yard games. He would go on to spend a dozen years with the Arizona Rattlers and is considered one of the best two-way players in AFL history. He earned the league's Ironman award in both 2003 and 2006 and ended his indoor career as the franchise leaders in reception yards, touchdowns, total tackles and unassisted tackles and second in total receptions.
Season, single-game and mini-plan tickets for UNLV home football games are on sale now.
