LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's tennis team remained undefeated with an impressive 4-1 win over former conference-rival BYU at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Thursday afternoon.
The Rebels improved to 7-0 on the year while the Cougars fell to 3-6. The hosts also improved to 7-8 all-time vs. BYU in Las Vegas.
UNLV took the doubles point by winning on the top two court by the identical score of 7-5.
In singles, the Rebels got a pair of straight-set wins and then clinched it when Anton Ornberg got past Jack Barnett on court five, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
REBEL OF THE MATCH: Jordan Sauer teamed with Alex Kobelt at the top of the lineup for a 7-5 win in doubles and then was the first one finished in singles by turning in a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Sam Tullis on court three.
QUOTABLE: "We were down in doubles but the guys stayed the course and got the point in the end. Everyone fought hard in singles and took care of business against a good BYU team.
"This win was for Billy Derango, a local tennis pro who has been in and out of the hospital with serious kidney problems but attended the match with a group of local teaching pros and UNLV alumni."
-UNLV Head Coach Owen Hambrook
NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV continues its long homestand by hosting UC Davis on Friday starting at 10 a.m. Admission to all matches is free of charge.
