Rebels Are Duke City Bound For UNM-Hosted Meet

UNLV track & field will participate in the New Mexico Collegiate Classic in Albuquerque this weekend.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV track & field program heads to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to participate in the New Mexico Collegiate Classic this weekend. The two-day indoor meet will run Friday and Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center, and feature No. 4 UCLA, No. 7 Kentucky, No. 23 Texas Tech, Alabama, Arizona State, San Diego State as well as host and No. 12 New Mexico.
 
This weekend's meet will be the first of three that the Rebels will attend in the Duke City this month, with UNM's Don Kirby Invitational (Feb. 13-14) slated for next week and the Mountain West's Indoor Championships set for the end of February (27-29).
 
The Rebels will send 21 student-athletes to Albuquerque, including Jazlynn Shearer who will compete in three events this weekend, beginning with the long jump Friday and the triple jump and 60m hurdles Saturday. Shearer, a freshman from San Jose, California, is coming off an impressive performance at the Texas Tech Invitational last week in Lubbock, Texas, where she registered a distance of 42-9 (13.03m) in the triple jump to earn the Mountain West's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week honors.
 
Also representing UNLV this weekend will be: Cassondra Hall, Kaysha Love, DeAndra Greer, Tianna Randle and Emerald Bowens in the 60m; Amari Prude in the 400m; Avi'Tal Wilson-Perteete, Emma Wahlenmaier and Elisa Rovere in the 600m; Jartierra Grissom in the high jump; and Jonon Young and Jaylen Walker in both the long jump and triple jump.
 
Friday's action begins with the long jump and high jump at 2:15 pm PT (3:15 pm MT) and 3:00 pm PT (4:00 pm MT), respectively, and continues with three straight running events – 400m, 600m and 200m.
 
Saturday starts early at 9:00 am PT (10:00 am MT) with the qualifying round of the 60m. The triple jump, mile, 400m and 60m hurdles are also scheduled for day two.
 
IN THE STANDINGS: As of Feb. 3, UNLV owns 25 top-eight spots in a total of 11 events in the MW standings.
- Shearer leads the MW and sits 15th nationally in the triple jump (42-9/13.03m). She also ranks second in the 60m hurdles (8.34) and third in the long jump (19-6.25/5.95m).
- Cassondra Hall leads the MW in the 60m (7.30) and sits second in the 200m (24.10).
- Kaysha Love leads the MW in the 200m (23.91) and sits second in the 60m (7.33).
- Jonon Young is second in the triple jump (42-5.25/12.93m) and fourth in the long jump (19-5.5/5.93m).
- In the 800m, Avi'Tal Wilson-Perteete (2:08.07) and Elisa Rovere (2:10.35) rank first and third, respectively.
- In the 60m hurdles, Jada Hicks sits third (8.40).
- In the shot put, Mackenna Howard sits second (49-9.25/15.17m).
