LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Despite spring sports not being able to complete their seasons, UNLV Athletics officially defeated UNR again in the annual Silver State Series presented by IBEW Local 401 and Nevada Donor Network.
The Wolf Pack earned the final three points via this week's Academic Progress Rate release (multi-year scores) and moved into a tie with the Rebels at 13.5 points apiece. However, a tie is broken by whichever side currently claims possession of the famed Fremont Cannon -- meaning UNLV earned its seventh win in the eight-year history of the competition thanks to the football team's dramatic overtime victory in Reno back in November.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the final point total did not include results from seven spring sports, six of which saw UNLV gain the advantage over UNR a year ago. Overall, the Wolf Pack have never scored more points than the Rebels but took home the honors once as the 2017 competition ended in a 24-24 tie and the trophy moved North for the first and only time.
The Rebels pushed to an early lead this year as volleyball, women's soccer and football all took three points from the Pack in the fall. The Mountain West champion women's indoor track & field squad again led the way for UNLV's winter sports while women's basketball's split during the regular-season to net 1.5 points. The Wolf Pack compiled its other points this time around from the sports of women's cross country, women's swimming & diving and men's basketball.
