LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's tennis squad has again earned the designation of Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team while a school-record seven individuals were named an ITA Scholar-Athlete for 2020.
Â
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any school that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above. Head Coach Kevin Cory's program has reached that milestone five straight years and in 18 of the 21 seasons with him at the helm.
Â
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must be a letterwinner, have a GPA of at least 3.50 for the current academic year, and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters. Earning that standing this year were seniors En-Pei Huang and Samantha Li; junior Izumi Asano; sophomore Connie Li; and freshmen Sara Alajbegovic, Olivia Elliott and Leslie Fujitani.
Â
Five of those players were earlier announced as part of a group of six UNLV women's players to earn 2020 Academic All-Mountain West honors. They were joined on that list by sophomore Hsuan Yu Lin. To be eligible for selection to the Academic All-MW Team, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.
Â
Five Rebels – Alajbegovic, Huang, Connie Li and Samantha Li, and Samantha Smith -- also earned the even more impressive designation of Mountain West Scholar-Athlete, which goes to those with a cumulative GPA or 3.5 or better.
Â
The 12-time Mountain West champion UNLV women's squad was looking to extend its school-record streak of winning either a regular-season or tournament championship to five years when the pandemic shut down competition in March.
