Rebels Finish In Top Five At Season Opener

UNLV men's golf shot third-lowest team score of the final round as David Rauch, Jack Trent and J.J. Gresco all placed among the top 22 individually at the Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson.

TUCSON, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot the third-lowest team score of the final round with a 1-over-par 285 on Wednesday to record a top-five finish at the season-opening Arizona Intercollegiate, which was played at the Sewailo Golf Club (par 71, 7,292 yards).

Host Arizona led wire-to-wire for the team title with a 54-hole score of 2-under 850. Wake Forest finished second at 4-over, followed by New Mexico in third at 16-over and San Francisco in fourth at 20-over. UNLV's three-round total was 25-over 877 as it ended the tournament in fifth place, shooting up three spots in the standings on the final day. There were a total of 17 teams competing.

Individually, Arizona's Brad Reeves held on for medalist honors by two shots at 4-under 209. Wake Forest's Michael Brennan and Iowa State's Lachlan Barker tied for second at 2-under.

UNLV had three players finish among the top 22 individuals among the field of 96 golfers. Junior David Rauch finished tied for 14th at 4-over, senior Jack Trent tied for 17th at 5-over and senior J.J. Gresco tied for 22nd at 6-over. The low Rebel of the final round was shot by sophomore George Leigh with a 2-under 69, which consisted of five birdies and three bogeys. Leigh finished the event tied for 69th at 14-over, and fifth-year student-athlete Justin Kim tied for 82nd at 19-over.

NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV's next scheduled action will be March 5-6 at The Jackrabbit Invitational at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada.
