TULSA, OK (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's golf team turned in its best tournament day of the fall, leading the field after the opening day of the Dale McNamara Invitational in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Rebels shot a 1-over 289 in round one and were at 3-under when second round play was suspended due to darkness at the Golf Club of Oklahoma.
A tornado touching down six miles from the hotel didn't phase the Rebels as they hold an 11-shot lead over second-place Nebraska (+8) heading into Tuesday, when the final holes of round two will be played starting at 8:30 a.m. CT, followed immediately by the third and final round.
Freshman
Kendall Todd, playing in just her third collegiate tournament, is atop the individual leaderboard at 4-under and leading by one stroke. Fellow freshman
Sydney Bryan and junior transfer
Nicole Lorup join Todd in the top 10 as Bryan sits tied for fourth at 2-under and Lorup tied for 10th at even. Freshman
Hina Matsui is tied for 26th at 4-over, while senior
Veronica Joels sits one shot behind Matsui in a tie for 31st at 5-over.
UNLV will be eyeing their first tournament win since taking first at its home tournament, the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown March 27-29, 2019, where the Rebels bested the rest of the field by eight strokes. That tournament also marks the last time a Rebel finished with medalist honors, which Todd can do with a strong finish Tuesday.
Behind UNLV in first at 3-under and Nebraska in second at 8-over is BYU in third at 13-under. Three teams are tied for fourth - New Mexico, SMU and Sam Houston - at 15-over to round out the top five. Todd holds the one-shot lead over Sam Houston's Jennifer Herbst and Oklahoma State's Hailey Jones, who are tied for second at 3-under, followed by four players tied for fourth, including UNLV's Bryan, at 2-under.
UP NEXT: The Rebels will finish out the final three holes of round two beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT, with the third round following immediately after.
