SAN MARCOS, TX (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's golf team finished under par as a team in back-to-back tournaments for the first time since 2017 after the Rebels carded a three-round score of 4-under 860 on the final day of the Jim West Invitational Monday in Texas. UNLV shot a second consecutive round under par at 1-under 287 to get to 4-under, while all five Rebels finished in the top 35 at the two-day event hosted by Texas State at Kissing Tree Golf Club.
Junior
Nicole Lorup and freshmen
Kendall Todd and
Sydney Bryan all finished the tournament at even to tie for 26th, while senior
Veronica Joels was one shot behind them at 1-over in a tie for 29th. Freshman
Hina Matsui rounded it out one shot behind Joels at 2-over for a tie for 34th. Bryan and Joels led the way with 11 birdies apiece, while Lorup sunk nine and Todd and Matsui each sank eight.
It was a strong week for the Rebels as they started it by winning the 2021 Dale McNamara in Tulsa at 3-under then finished the week with the second straight under par performance. The last time the Rebels accomplished that feat in back-to-back tournaments is when they finished 21-under at The Dickson on February 27-28, 2017 and 12-under the following week at the Battle at Boulder Creek, March 6-7, 2017. The feat is even more impressive considering the lineup features four newcomers, including three freshmen who are playing their first fall of collegiate golf.
Oklahoma State entered the day with a 10-shot lead and finished with the team title at 39-under, besting second place TCU by seven shots. Miami finished in third at 16-under, followed by Florida State in fourth at 15-under, Texas Tech in fifth at 13 under and Texas A&M in sixth at 11-under. OSU's Caley McGinty and TCU's Caitlyn McNab were tied atop the individual leaderboard heading into Monday and McGinty edged out McNab by two strokes to win medalist honors at 15-under. McNab took second at 13-under, followed by OSU's Isabella Fierro in third at 11-under and three players tied for fourth at 9-under.
UP NEXT: The Rebels will finish out the fall next week in Las Vegas, playing in Northern Arizona's The Clash At Boulder Creek at Boulder Creek Golf Club, Oct. 24-26.
