LAS VEGAS, NV (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV women's golf sophomore
Elina Saksa was tabbed the Mountain West Women's Golfer Of The Week, the conference office announced Thursday. This is the first career weekly honor for the Turku, Finland, native.
Competing at Long Beach State's Gold Rush tournament, Feb. 22-23, Saksa shot a 2-over 218 to finish in fifth place at the event. That included a second round 67, setting a career single-round low for the sophomore. Her previous low was a 69, which she shot twice as a freshman in the fall of 2019. Saksa dropped 13 total birdies over the 54 holes, with eight of those coming during her stellar second round. It was the second top-10 finish for Saksa in as many tournaments this spring.
Saksa's performance also helped the Rebels finish the event in a tie for second - their highest team finish since winning the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in October of 2019.
This is the first weekly conference honor for UNLV since former Rebel
Polly Mack earned the award in March 2019.
