TUCSON, AZ (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's golf team continued to play well in the state of Arizona as the Rebels shot a 3-under 285 to sit tied fof fifth after day one of the Mountain View Invitational at The Preserve Golf Club in Tucson. UNLV's team score was its second-best single round score of the spring, coming just a week after the Rebels shot a 5-under in the opening round of ASU's Clover Cup last weekend.
Senior
Samantha Fuller was the top Rebel performer of the day, carding a 3-under 69 in the opening round to sit tied for eighth heading into the second round Saturday. Fuller has had an outstanding spring campaign, shooting par or better in seven of her 10 rounds and finishing in the top 12 in all three events she's competed in. She had five birdies Friday.
Freshman
Madeleine Laux, an Arizona native, was the next highest Rebel on the leaderboard, shooting a 1-under 71 to sit tied for 17th, while junior
Veronica Joels came in one shot behind Laux at even to sit tied for 20th. Sophomore
Elina Saksa shot a 1-over 73 to sit tied for 30th and freshman
Gracie Olkowski rounded things out in a tie for 63rd at 7-over 79.
Texas impressed Friday with a 16-under as a team to lead the field by six strokes after the first 18 holes with Houston and Iowa State tied for second a 10-under. Oklahoma is right on their heels in fourth at 9-under, while UNLV and North Texas are tied for fifth at three-under.
Texas' Ashleigh Park turned in the best individual round of the day, shooting a 6-under 66 to sit atop the leaderboard with a one-stroke lead. Longhorn teammate Agathe Laisne, Oklahoma State's Rina Tatematsu Oklahoma State and Houston's Zoe Slaughter are all tied for second at 5-under, with three others - Houston's Anne Normann, Iowa State's Amelia Mehmet Grohn and North Texas' Audrey Tan - in a tie for fifth at four-under.
NEXT FOR THE REBELS: The Rebels will tee off for the second round at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday morning.
