Rebels Win 10 Events At Spring Opener

Gaby Palmer rewrites UNLV track & field’s pole vault mark, Jonon Young moves into second place in the triple jump.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The Rebel track & field team won 10 events and recorded 26 top-eight finishes at its own UNLV Spring Opener at Myron Partridge Stadium & Sheila Tarr-Smith Field Saturday. Jonon Young led the Scarlet & Gray with victories in both the long jump and triple jump, with her mark in the latter ranking as the second-best performance in the program's outdoor record book. Additionally, Gaby Palmer rewrote the program's pole vault record for the second time this season.

Young's marks in the long jump (20-3.75/6.19m) and triple jump (43-8.5/13.32) were both personal bests. She now only trails Billie Butler's distance of 43-11.25, achieved in 1992, for first in the all-time performance list.

Palmer notched a first-place height of 12-11.75 (3.96m) in the pole vault to surpass her mark of 12-0 (3.66m) which she recorded at the UNLV Winter Challenge on Feb. 13, surpassing Charlotte McGee's 11-4.25 from 2000.

The Scarlet & Gray also picked up wins from Cassondra Hall in the 200m (23.47), Amari Prude in the 400m (55.92), Alia Scott in the 400m hurdles (1:01.07 PB), Jartierra Grissom in the high jump (5-5/1.65m) and Cassidy Osborne-Butler in the hammer throw (182-8/55.68m PB) as well as its 4x100m relay "A" and 4x400m relay "A."

UNLV posted eight more podium finishes with second-place showings from Tianna Randle in the 200m (23.73), Avi'Tal Wilson-Perteete in the 1500m (4:36.24), Rosalie Breems in the 100m hurdles (14.07) and Tenia Landrum in the long jump (19-9/6.02m PB). Two individuals – Esmeralda Tenorio (100m: 11.97) and Agnes Mansaray (800m: 2:17.23) – and two relays – 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay – were third.

QUOTEABLE: "We are super proud of how the team competed today. It was a little windy, but they stayed focused and knew that we had to work through this meet to focus on the end goal. We had a lot of good performances and we intend to build from here for the outdoor season." – Yvonne Wade, the Director of UNLV Track & Field and Cross Country.

NEXT TIME OUT: Rebel track & field returns to action in two weeks at its own UNLV Spring Invitational & Sheila Tarr-Smtih Multis at Myron Partridge Stadium on March 18-20.
