LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV track & field returns to action this week at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships. The three-day meet, which begins Thursday and concludes Saturday, will take place at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis, California.
The Scarlet & Gray enters the conference meet with 14 of its student-athletes listed a total of 19 times in the top-eight of nine different individual events in the MW rankings. Overall, the Rebels sit atop the 100m, 200m, 800m, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay and triple jump. Additionally, the team has four others at No. 2 in the 100m, 100m hurdles, pole vault and long jump, and one at No. 3 in the 100m hurdles.
Cassondra Hall, who was chosen as the MW's Female Outstanding Performer of the Meet after helping UNLV claim the conference's 2020 indoor title, factors in four of the Rebels' first-place showings this season. Hall is first in both the 100m (11.27) and 200m (23.03), and has run legs of the 4x100m relay (43.91) and 4x400m relay (3:36.25). Moreover, she is sixth in the MW in the 400m (54.54).
Avi'Tal Wilson-Perteete and
Jonon Young own the other two top performances this year, as the former is first in the 800m (2:04.44), while the latter is first in the triple jump (43-3.25/13.19m). Young is also second in the long jump (20-8/6.30m).
MEET SCHEDULE: The meet gets underway Thursday with the first half of the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon at 3:30 pm and 4:00 pm, respectively. Later that evening, the 10,000m will be run with the men going at 9:45 pm and the women following at 10:30 pm. Friday's slate features the finals of four field events (hammer, long jump, pole vault and shot put) and one track (women's steeplechase), as well as qualifying round of seven track events (1500m, 100m hurdles, 400m, 100m, 800m, 400m hurdles and 200m). Saturday's schedule will have the trials and finals of four field events (javelin, triple jump, discus and high jump) and the finals of nine track events (Friday's seven plus the 5000m, 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay).
MOUNTAIN WEST RANKINGS: In addition to the aforementioned individual rankings, UNLV's
Tianna Randle and
Kaysha Love are both ranked in the top-seven of the 100m and 200m, and both are members of the No. 1 4x100m relay.
Azaria Hill is seventh in the 100m and 10th in the 200m. The Rebels own three of the top four spots in the 100m hurdles with
Jazlynn Shearer (No. 2),
Rosalie Breems (No. 3) and
Taylor Shorter (No. 4), while
Alia Scott is No. 4 in the 400m hurdles.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: Three of the noted student-athletes are in the top 25 of the national rankings in a total of four events. Hall is 21st in both the 100m and 200m, while Wilson-Perteete is 22nd in the 800m and Young is 22nd in the triple jump.
