LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Super Senior placekicker Daniel Gutierrez set a school record with five made field goals on Friday and has now become the first Rebel in eight years to earn Special Teams Player of the Week honors twice in a season, the league announced Monday.
The Los Angeles native remains perfect with his leg this season, improving to 12-for-12 in field goals and 30-for-30 in extra points while his next point will make him the school's all-time leading scorer. Against Fresno State, Gutierrez made field goals from distances of 48, 42, 38, 33 and 27 yards and added one extra point to give him 16 total points, which tied Evan Pantel's school single-game record set vs. Howard in 2017.
Easily the most accurate kicker in school history, Gutierrez was also named MW Special Teams Player of the Week on October 3 after a win over New Mexico. Coming into this season, he was actually the most recent MW Special Teams honoree from UNLV when as a freshman he was honored for his kicking heroics in an upset victory at Fresno State way back in 2017. The last Rebel specialist to earn more than one such honor in the same season was kicker Nicolai Bornand in 2014.
This marked the fifth time in 2022 that a Rebel was recognized by the league, which is the most in a season since 2013 when four players also won a total of five nods. With quarterback Doug Brumfield (Aug. 29), running back Aidan Robbins (Sept. 19) winning the offensive award and linebacker Austin Ajiake earning on the defensive side of the ball (Sept. 26), Gutierrez's pair of honors marks the first time that UNLV won at least one from offense, defense and special teams since 2008.
UNLV heads out for its final road game of the regular season this week as the Rebels play at Hawai'i on Saturday starting at 8 p.m. PT. The team's regular-season finale is one week later vs. UNR at Allegiant Stadium, with a 3 p.m. kickoff.
