Big Blasts Propel Rebels over BYU

UNLV opens its season with a 5-3 victory in the Rebel Kickoff

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — Mia Trejo blasted a 3-run home run over deep center and Janyssa Martin smacked a line drive over the right field fence as the Rebels started their season victorious.

UNLV (1-0) used a five-run fourth inning to put away BYU (0-1), 5-3, in the opening game of the Rebel Kickoff at Eller Media Stadium Thursday night.

"I was really proud of how they played," UNLV head coach Kristie Fox said. "We put ourselves in some tough situations and were able to find a way out of them."

Down 1-0, the Rebels were back to the top of the order in the fourth. Leadoff Maddie Schmidt drew a walk and advanced to second on April Visser's groundout. Designated hitter Denise Armendariz singled to right field and Mia Trejo plated the trio with a straight shot across the diamond.

"You step in with the mindset of not making the moment bigger than it is," Trejo said. "It's an at-bat like the one before it. I'm still trying to do one job. I'm trying to drive people in.

"Our team had really good energy, we stayed positive throughout the entire night. BYU is a good team; they came out swinging. We feel so good right now."

Not to be outdone, Janyssa Martin hit a frozen rope that carried enough altitude to pass over the right field fence, bringing home Alyssa Trejo for two more runs.

"Even though we only had one big inning," Fox said, "all of our at-bats were very good. It made their pitcher change her complete game plan. I was proud of how all our batter's competed in the box."

Jenny Bressler (W, 1-0) shrugged off a shaky start to command six innings against the Cougars. Bressler worked out of a one-out, bases loaded first to surrender just one run.

"That's the type of pitcher she is, that she's going to be able to go out there and make adjustments. We stick with her and help her work out of it. When we were able to limit the damage in the first to only one run, we were confident moving forward."

BYU center fielder Violet Zavodnik homered to right field in the sixth. That was the last gasp for the Cougars as UNLV reliever Jasmine Martin forced three ground outs in the final frame.

UNLV returns to the field Friday at 2 p.m. for a matchup with Cal State Bakersfield, followed by Hawaii to continue the action at the Rebel Kickoff.
