Rebels Finish Friday With Pair of Wins

UNLV improves to 3-0 with victories over CSU Bakersfield, Hawaii

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — UNLV captured two wins at the Rebel Kickoff tournament, defeating Cal State Bakersfield and Hawaii Friday at Eller Media Stadium.

UNLV (3-0) shut out Cal State Bakersfield (0-2) 8-0 and held off a late rally by Hawaii (0-2) for a 5-3 victory in the doubleheader.

"Our team is coming out and competing," UNLV head coach Kristie Fox said. "If something happens, they're settling down and not making any moment bigger than it is."

Game 1: UNLV 8, CSU Bakersfield 0 (5 innings)

Alanna Thiede (W, 1-0) and Sabrina Jolin combined to give up just two hits as UNLV run-ruled the Roadrunners.

Janyssa Martin scored UNLV's first run after rounding the bases on three walks and a hit batter.

"I feel like my place in the bottom half of the lineup really helps the team feel confident in all our at-bats," Janyssa Martin said, "not just in one inning, but the next."

Maddie Schmidt drew a bases-loaded walk in the third and April Visser singled to right to plate two more runs. Schmidt rounded third in time to view CSUB catcher Jocelyn Molina misplay a bounce from the throw from right field and raced home to put the Rebels up 4-0.

The next inning, Janyssa Martin lifted a three-run home run just inside the left field foul pole for her second roundtripper in as many days.

Game 2: UNLV 5, Hawaii 3

Jasmine Martin (W, 1-0) spelled Jenny Bressler in relief as UNLV's defense was on charge in the nightcap.

Bressler struck out seven through five innings before Hawaii had three successive singles to load the bases in the top of the sixth and equalize the score. Jasmine Martin forced a double play and ground out to keep the Wahine at bay and let the Rebels' bats take over.

Hawaii's Ashley Murphy (L, 0-1) took the circle in the bottom of the frame, and the Rebels exacted patience.

"When Hawaii made the pitching change–when a new pitcher comes in, you want to see what they're capable of," Fox said. "So, early on, we were taking pitches and seeing what she looked like. That's what allowed us to get those runners on early–just putting that pressure on and waiting for her to throw a strike."

Mia Trejo drew a bases-loaded walk that was followed by, younger sister, Alyssa's sacrifice fly to score Samantha Diaz and secure the Rebels' victory.

UNLV returns to the field for a Saturday doubleheader in its final contests of the Rebel Kickoff. The Rebels face rematches with Cal State Bakersfield and Hawaii, respectively, at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
