LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — You really had to see it to believe it.Â
Last-chance heroics secured a fifth straight win to open the season as UNLV (5-0) finished play in the Rebel Kickoff tournament Saturday night.
Janyssa Martin hit a three-run blast in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete a five-run rally as UNLV defeated Hawaii 12-11 in extra innings. All five runs scored with two outs series of at-batsÂ
"I think we were pressing a little bit in the middle of the game," UNLV head coach
Kristie Fox said. "I was just trying to keep the team calm and composed in those final at-bats.
"Early on, we had a lot of opportunities and we had too many fly outs. So our big push late in the game was less fly outs, more line drives, and the home runs will come."
The Rebels cruised past Cal State Bakersfield 9-3 in their afternoon opener. UNLV scored four runs in the first as
Alyssa Trejo knocked in two with a triple and then scored on the next at-bat when
Denise Armendariz smacked a home run into the scoreboard in left field.
"Our pitching staff is doing a really good job. I was really impressed with their maturity and composure when I was putting them in some tough situations. We're trying to figure out the best matchups for each of them, when to pull them, and when to let them work through things.
"And then for the team to have their backs and get them the run support that we needed to get the 'Ws' today is a really promising sign for this bunch."
