LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — Weber State scored four runs in the top of the seventh to rally past UNLV 6-5 Friday night at Eller Media Stadium.
UNLV's (5-1) first loss of the season stung deeply after the Rebels used a late-innings rally of its own to capture the lead.
"We left way too many runners on base and gave up too many walks to their batters," UNLV head coach
Kristie Fox said. "The biggest thing is that we learn lessons from today. I want to see how we bounce back tomorrow."
UNLV stranded 11 baserunners, including five in scoring position, as the Rebels batted seven hits and drew six walks.
Weber State scored first, driving in two who reached base on balls with two outs to take the early lead.
UNLV third baseman
Lauryn Barker shook off an 0-for-11 slump with a 2-for-4, three RBI performance. Barker drove in a game-tying run with two outs in the fourth and a go-ahead run with two outs in the fifth.
"She put in some work this week," Fox said. "Made a couple of adjustments, trying something a little bit new. After that first at-bat, she just needed a little reminder to compete at the plate, and good things happened."
Weber State right fielder KC Whiting doubled to lead off the seventh inning. Whiting scored on pinch hitter Mika Chong's single two batters later and Chong tied the game McKell McCuistion's single up the middle. Pinch hitter Daisy Taloa drew a bases-loaded walk to score the go-ahead run and Faith Hoe's sacrifice fly made it four for the frame.
Ariana Martinez led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run, but Mariah Ramirez pitched three straight fly outs to seal the victory.
Weber State secured an 11-3 run-rule victory over Kansas City earlier in the afternoon.
Saturday's games of the UNLV Desert Classic begin at noon with Weber State facing off against Kansas City once more. UNLV gets its rematch with Weber State at 3 p.m. and then will face Kansas City in the following contest.
