LAKE CHARLES, La. (UNLVRebels.com) — UNLV pitchers tossed a pair of complete-game shutouts as the Rebels swept through the first day of the Evangeline Bank and Trust Invitational.
UNLV (9-2) downed Sam Houston (5-7) 7-0 in their opener, then dropped tournament host McNeese State (6-6) 3-0 in the nightcap.
"It was good to see our team bounce back," UNLV head coach
Kristie Fox. "We put ourselves in some difficult situations, but this time we shut it down.
"Our pitchers had outstanding focus and really attacked batters today."
Jenny Bressler improved to 5-0 after blanking McNeese State. The senior pitcher ended the bottom of the third with a strikeout, stranding Cowgirls on second and third who reached scoring position with one out on the board.
Lauryn Barker snagged a line drive and tagged out a runner on third to complete an unassisted double play in the fourth.
Senior first baseman
Mia Trejo hit 5-for-6 on the day with five runs batted in and one run scored. Trejo now leads the Rebels with a .543 batting average and 14 RBI and nine extra-base hits through 11 games.
"Mia's been working really hard. The best part about her she never stops working. She was in the cages all week, tweaking and building her confidence."
UNLV is back on the field for one game Saturday, a rematch against Sam Houston scheduled for a 10:15 a.m. first pitch.
Game One: UNLV 7, Sam Houston 0
Sophomore
Jasmine Martin (W, 3-1) threw the first complete game shutout of her career as UNLV blanked Sam Houston 7-0 at Joe Miller Field.
Martin struck out a career-high nine batters and allowed just one hit and three walks over seven innings.
Janyssa Martin slugged a triple into the top of the left field wall in UNLV's second at-bat of the game.
Mia Trejo doubled to plate Martin for a 1-0 start.Â
Maddie Schmidt took the first offering after Sam Houston's mound visit with starter (name, L) back up the middle for an RBI single, driving in
April Visser.
Janyssa Martin reached base on balls and the Bearkats called in reliever (name).
Mia Trejo walked and
Alyssa Trejo singled back up the middle for back-to-back RBIs. Then
Denise Armendariz smacked a two-RBI groundout to third base.
Jasmine Martin retired the side in order in the top of the seventh, punching out the last two.

Bressler earned her 16th career shutout as UNLV socked tournament host McNeese State 3-0 in the nightcap.
Mia Trejo batted in all three runs, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles. Trejo's single in the third drove in
Julia Vollmer from second and a double just out of reach of the third basemen plated
Janyssa Martin in the fifth. Trejo brought in
Maddie Schmidt for a seventh-inning insurance run with a deep double to right center.
