LAKE CHARLES, La. (UNLVRebels.com) — UNLV scored six runs with two outs in the top of the fifth to rally past Sam Houston 8-4 Saturday at the Evangeline Bank and Trust Invitational.
Down 4-2,
Lauryn Barker doubled down the left-field line to drive in the game-tying run. UNLV cycled to the top of the batting order and the Rebels finished the inning 5-for-5 at the plate with three extra-base hits to finish off the Bearkats.
"It was great to see Lauryn step up and get an RBI at a critical point in the game," UNLV head coach
Kristie Fox said. "Early in the game, we left a lot of runners on base. That play put the other team on their heels and we took advantage of that momentum."
With Barker on second and Samatha Diaz on third, leadoff hitter
Sofia Morales doubled through the right side, scoring two more.Â
Janyssa Martin then doubled down the right-field line with
Mia Trejo wrapping up the scoring with an RBI single.
Sam Houston led 3-0 after three innings, but UNLV scored two unearned runs with two outs in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit.
An error, walk and
Denise Armendariz single loaded the bases with Rebels. Sam Houston relieved starter Brailey Wasik for Christine Billmeier, who walked
April Visser to bring home
Mia Trejo.
Ariana Martinez followed with a pinch-hit RBI single.
Jenny Bressler (W, 6-0) picked up her sixth win of the year after throwing five full innings, striking out six.Â
"It was a quick turnaround for Jenny, and we needed to play better defensively for her. But she put together several good innings for us."
UNLV finishes tournament play with a doubleheader against Manhattan and Memphis beginning at 8 a.m. PT.
