TUCSON, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) — UNLV took one and gave one Saturday at the Bear Down Fiesta, counting an 8-0 run rule victory over Yale before suffering a 7-2 defeat to tournament host No. 8 Arizona.
Arizona's Hanah Bowen (W, 5-2) gave up four hits and a walk while striking out nine Rebels in a complete-game appearance.
"When you play teams like that, you've got to be ready to go and, frankly, we didn't play well," UNLV head softball coach
Kristie Fox said.
UNLV (17-5) has a rematch with Yale (2-7) Sunday at 9 a.m. PT to end play at Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium.
Game Two: Arizona 7, UNLV 2
UNLV turned a double play to retire the first two batters of the game, but Arizona's Carlie Scupin and Bailey Thompson homered to light up 4 on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first.
Alanna Thiede took over in the circle in the second and closed the inning in nine pitches.

"For us to be in the game when we didn't play our best is a good sign for us. I think if we come any play our game, we've got a better opportunity."
Thiede retired six of the next seven Wildcats until starting the fifth giving up a single and a walk. Scupin hit a sacrifice fly to plate Giuliana Koutsoyanopu.
Sofia Morales tracked down a long fly in right and shortstop Samatha Diaz made a sliding catch for a force out a second to give the UNLV fans some thrills. But the defensive highlights were all for not as Koutsoyanopu hit a two-out, two-run home run deep over center in the sixth to mark the final score.
Game One: UNLV 8, Yale 0 (5 innings)
Jasmine Martin threw a complete-game shut out and
Denise Armendariz batted in three runs as the Rebels made quick work of Yale in an 8-0 run-rule victory Saturday morning at Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium.
Martin (W, 5-1) struck out five batters and allowed just one hit as the Rebels cruised through five innings in one hour, two minutes.
Denise Armendariz hit 2-for-2, driving in runners with singles in the first and second innings.
Sofia Morales was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and 2 RBI.Â
April Visser smacked her team-leading ninth home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the fourth for UNLV's mercy run.Â
