SAN JOSE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) — San Jose State (20-19 overall, 6-8 Mountain West) held off UNLV (29-10, 7-4) after plating the go-ahead run in the fourth inning for a 3-2 victory Friday afternoon.
SJSU was hitless until Jocylyn Vidal and Karizma Bergensen led off the fourth inning with a single and RBI double, respectively, that kicked off the Spartans' rally.
Aided by a gusting wind, Trenity Edwards' shallow fly dropped into no man's land in left field and let Bergensen race home from third.
UNLV's first two batters scored after both were hit by pitches. SJSU starter Jessica Ullegue (W, 15-4) opened the game beaning
April Visser and
Maddie Schmidt.
Denise Armendariz smacked a pitch through the left side to score Visser and
Ariana Martinez singled into right to bring home Schmidt and provide the Rebels a 2-0 lead after the first frame.
After walking her first two batters,
Alanna Thiede (L, 7-3) struck out Ashley Rico and forced a ground out. Nearly escaping the initial inning unscathed, a wild pitch allowed leadoff Alyssa Graham to cross the plate.
The Rebels moved runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth innings, but each time their offense was stifled by Ullegue.
UNLV and San Jose State face off for the rubber match to decide the series Saturday at noon.
