SAN JOSE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) — The Rebels moved their leadoff hitter around the bases for what would be the game-winning run as
Jenny Bressler dominated in the circle Saturday.
UNLV (30-10 overall, 8-4 Mountain West) stifled San Jose State (20-20, 6-9) with a 2-0 victory, capturing two out of three against the Spartans.
Bressler (W, 17-6) threw a season-high 12 strikeouts in her second no-hitter of the season, allowing just one walk.
"Jenny looked great all weekend," UNLV head softball coach
Kristie Fox said. "She kept their team off-balance and her pitches were moving really well. We were defintely confident going into the game that her success would continue."
In 17 innings through three appearances in the series, Bressler struck out 26 batters, allowed only three walks and did not let a run score.
Sofia Morales led off the game with a single and advanced to second on
Maddie Schmidt's sacrifice bunt. Two batters later,
Ariana Martinez snuck a single through the right side to bring Morales home.
"We made the adjustment to get the lefties to the top of the order because Ullegue seemed to struggle with them a little more and it paid off. We did the little things right and executed our game plan.
Bressler mowed down the Spartans, retiring the side in order until the fifth when Jackie Rookaird drew a full-count walk. It would be SJSU's lone baserunner.
SJSU starter Jessica Ullegue was nearly as effective after the first inning but surrendered a triple to Schmidt in the top of the sixth that became an unearned run.
Ariana Martinez batted a two-out hit to the shortstop who muffed the throw to first and Schmidt crossed the plate for UNLV's second and final run.
The Rebels are back home at Eller Media Stadium in Las Vegas next weekend hosting Utah State for Childhood Abuse Awareness Weekend. Game one of the three-game series starts at 6 p.m. Friday, April 22.
