RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's golf team wrapped up the 2022 Mountain West Championship Wednesday at Mission Hills Country Club, finishing in fifth at 29-over after a 6-over final round.
The three-day 54-hole event played on the Dinah Shore Course (Par 72 6,270 yards) concluded with No. 5 San Jose State winning the conference title by an impressive 30 strokes as the only team under par at 4-under. Spartan standout and sixth-ranked player in the nation Natasha Andrea Oon took medalist honors with a 10-under, setting records for lowest tournament score and largest margin of victory at the event. Oon broke the previous low of 7-under, set by former Rebel All-American Therese Koelbaek in 2011.
Three Rebels finished in the top 12 on the leaderboard, with freshman
Sydney Bryan tying for 10th at 6-over 22 and senior
Veronica Joels and junior
Nicole Lorup tying for 12th at 7-over 223. Lorup saved her best round for last as she shot an even 72 Wednesday to jump eight spots on the leaderboard. Freshman
Kendall Todd also shot even over the final 18 holes for her best round of the event, helping her move up 12 spots to finish in a tie for 26th at 13-over 229. Freshman
Hina Matsui rounded it out for the Rebels in 44th at 32-over.
Behind the Mountain West Champion Spartans was New Mexico in second at 26-over, Fresno State in third at 27-over, Boise State in fourth at 28-over and the Rebels in fifth at 29-over. SJSU had three of the four top finishers in the event, with Lucia Lopez-Ortega taking second at 3-under and Kajsa Arwefjall tied for third with New Mexico's Lauren Lehigh at even.
San Jose State earns the conference's automatic bid to NCAA Regionals, which are set to take place the weekend of May 6.
UP NEXT: The Rebels will have to wait until the NCAA Women's Golf Selection Show on Wednesday, April 27 to find out if they will continue their postseason play at NCAA Regionals.
NOTES:
• Rebels won three regular season team tournament titles in 2021-22 and finished at par or better in five straight during one stretch, a new program record
• UNLV opened the spring campaign winning its home tournament, The Show, by 13 strokes at 4-under 860 at Spanish Trail Country Club
• UNLV won two tournaments during the fall portion of its season for the first time in program history (Dale McNamara & The Clash at Boulder Creek)
• UNLV shot an 8-under 280 in the final round of the fall (eighth lowest all-time) and opened the spring with a 12-under 276 at The Show (T-3rd lowest all-time)
• The Rebels won the 2021 Dale McNamara Invitational Oct 11-12 in Tulsa, Oklahoma by 11 strokes, marking first tournament win since 2019 (Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown); Three Rebels finished in the top six with freshman
Sydney Bryan winning her first collegiate tournament at 4-under 212
