LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — UNLV split Saturday's games versus Utah State, first shutting out the Aggies in the resumption of a game that began Friday before taking a last-inning loss in game two.
The results set up a rubber match Sunday at 11 a.m. to stake claim to the series and second place in the Mountain West Conference standings.
Game One: UNLV 6, Utah State 0
Jenny Bressler threw her seventh complete-game shutout of the season, albeit over two days, as UNLV defeated Utah State 6-0 Saturday afternoon.
Friday's softball game between UNLV and Utah State was suspended due to a technical issue with lighting and resumed Saturday at 1 p.m.
Bressler collected nine strikeouts, allowing just three hits and a walk in 19 ½ hours of work.
The Rebels plated their first two batters as
Sofia Morales scored on
Ariana Martinez's sacrifice fly and
Maddie Schmidt came home with
Denise Armendariz's single to first base.
Martinez batted in two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, hitting a ground ball up the middle that scored Schmidt and
April Visser. It was Martinez's 11th straight game reaching base.
Another pair of runs came in during the sixth off the bat of
Mia Trejo.
Alyssa Trejo drew a walk and then back-to-back bunt singles loaded the bases with Morales and Schmidt.
Mia Trejo singled through the left side to drive in two.
UNLV led Utah State 4-0 after five innings when officials suspended play.
Game Two: Utah State 3, UNLV 2
Bressler's scoreless streak ended after 24 â…” innings when USU second baseman Zaia Castruita hit a solo home run in the top of the second.
The Rebels rebounded in the bottom of the third when Visser knocked in two runs off a single up the middle.
Samantha Diaz reached first after Castruita dropped a pop fly and
Alyssa Trejo drew her second pinch-hit, four-pitch walk of the afternoon to have two runners on for Visser.
Alanna Thiede took over in the circle for Bressler in the fourth and retired the next 10 batters in order until Castruita drew an eight-pitch walk in the seventh inning. Mackenzie Macfarlane doubled to the right field corner in the next at-bat. Tyler Thornton, pinch running for Castruita, made a dash for home and was called safe as catcher
Julia Vollmer's tag was applied in a cloud of dust.
Two batters late, Emily Tidd pinch hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Macfarlane for the go-ahead run.
UNLV put runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh, but lined into a double play at shortstop to conclude the game.
