ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) —
Denise Armendariz homered twice as the Rebels run-ruled the Lobos for a second straight day.
UNLV (34-11 overall, 12-5 Mountain West) crushed New Mexico (25-21, 5-12) with a 16-6, six-inning victory Saturday afternoon.
"I really like how the middle of our lineup has been picking back up," UNLV head softball coach
Kristie Fox said. "The bottom of our lineup has been carrying us and now the middle is having good at-bats and that's where your seeing better run production."
Armendariz's two hits went the distance as she knocked in three runs in each the fifth and sixth innings.Â
Just ahead of Armendariz at fourth in the Rebels' order,
Ariana Martinez hit 2-for-4 with four RBIs. The duo is a combined 10-for-18 with 17 RBIs and four runs scored through two games against New Mexico.
"I like how they've stuck with it. They've stayed confident even though it wasn't going their way. The game pays people back who keep working hard."
UNLV's 16 runs were the most scored since defeating Idaho State 19-4 on April 3, 2010.
The Rebels scored three runs in each the second and fourth innings, but each time the Lobos responded to close the gap.
The Lobos made two errors in the fifth which allowed UNLV to extend the inning and score five of its six runs unearned to take a 12-5 lead.
The first pitch for Sunday's series finale is 11 a.m. PT.
