Rebels Scar No. 25 SDSU's Spotless Conference Record

UNLV and San Diego State face off for rubber game Sunday at noon

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — The Rebels put a period on No. 25 San Diego State's 12-game winning streak and unblemished conference record.

UNLV (28-8 overall, 6-2 Mountain West) weathered the Aztecs (26-11, 10-1) for an 8-7 win Saturday at Eller Media Stadium. The Rebels built an 8-1 lead but had to rebound a six-run sixth inning.

After being shut out for two consecutive games, the Rebels unloaded in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead.

"That can kind of put you in a situation where there's a little doubt in your mind," UNLV head coach Kristie Fox said. "For us to come in and compete and battle and get it done, that's huge.

"I don't care what it looks like or how it happens, they're obviously tough to beat."

Maddie Schmidt's single and Mia Trejo's walk put UNLV's No. 2 and No. 3 hitters on base. Four successive hits moved a quartet of Rebels around the diamond and SDSU starter Allie Light was pulled from the game.

UNLV starter Alanna Thiede (W, 7-2) was perfect through 4 â…” innings, retiring the first 14 batters in order. A shallow fly to right field by Jessica Cordola ended the spotless record and Makena Brocki reached base on a throwing error that allowed Cordola to race home for the Aztecs' first run.

"Alanna was sharp today. She was hitting her spots and mixing her speeds. I was really happy with her performance. (San Diego State) caught on a little bit towards the end but they started finding some holes and making some changes."

A hit batter and three straight singles ended Thiede's dominance in the circle. Jasmine Martin entered in relief but was nicked for another three consecutive hits that put the go-ahead run at the plate, compelling Fox to bring in her ace.

Jenny Bressler earned her 11th career save, matching UNLV's all-time record. Bressler entered in the sixth and, after an early passed ball allowed a run to score, captured the final two outs of the inning before sitting down the side in the seventh.

"Jenny had some struggles early on and battled through them and that's what shows how good of a pitcher she really is. It's not about how she's pitching when she feels well, it's how she's pitching when she doesn't feel well that sets her apart."

Schmidt led off the fifth inning with a triple and scored when Denise Armendariz's liner deflected off pitcher Dee Dee Hernandez. With Armendariz aboard, Ariana Martinez, who batted a two-RBI double in the first, smacked a no-doubter into the palm trees past the deep center field fence line.

The Rebels hit 6-for-10 with runners on base.

Martinez finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and four RBIs. Schmidt was 2-for-3 with two runs and Armendariz was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.

It was San Diego State's first loss since March 11 and the Aztecs will likely turn to conference ERA leader Maggie Balint to be in the circle for game three of the series.

"It's all hands on deck tomorrow and we know who's going to be in the circle (for SDSU). We need to make some adjustments, take advantage of our opportunities and clean up the defense a little bit."

UNLV and San Diego State face off in the rubber match Sunday at noon. The game will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network app and at https://theMW.com/watch.

"We're leaving here with a smile on our faces and building off of it."
