FORT COLLINS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) — The Rebels are about to play for their first-ever postseason championship title.
Jasmine Martin and
Jenny Bressler combined to throw a no-hitter and lead UNLV (43-14) over Central Arkansas (37-21) 1-0 in the National Invitational Softball Championship Semifinal on Wednesday.
"Jasmine's done a great job for us this weekend," UNLV head coach
Kristie Fox said. "She hasn't thrown a ton of innings, but really did a good job of mixing her speeds. And our team played great defense behind her.
"At the end, we just thought we needed to give them a different look. {eople don't tend to hit the ball out of the ballpark against Jenny. We were willing to make them string 3 or 4 hits together in that seventh."
UNLV advances to play Baylor in Thursday's championship final at 10 a.m. PT.
"It's the one last show, we're going to leave it all out on the field."
Martin and the Rebel defense stifled the Bears for six innings before Bressler entered for her sixth save of the season and the 11th of her career, both UNLV records.Â
Denise Armendariz tallied the game's only run with a solo shot over center in the top of the fifth. It was Armendariz's ninth RBI in her last three games.
GAME 1: UNLV 3, North Alabama 1
UNLV exacted revenge on its opening-round loss with a 3-1 win over North Alabama Wednesday morning to advance to the NISC's Championship Round.
Haley Stokes' leadoff homer to right center in the second inning gave the Lions a 1-0 lead they held until
Janyssa Martin, starting in the field for the first time since March 22, batted her own solo shot in the top of the fifth.
UNLV's offense came alive in the top of the sixth as
Sofia Morales reached third after a leadoff single and
Mia Trejo doubled down the left-field line.
Denise Armendariz, who batted in all six runs in Tuesday's victory, snuck a bloop single into right center to score both Morales and Trejo.
Jenny Bressler (W, 29-7) tossed her 19th complete game of the season and fanned six to match UNLV's career strikeout record (223; Lori Harrigan, 1991).Â
