Prime Time Saturday: UNLV vs. New Mexico

The Lady Rebels host the Lobos in marquee Mountain West matchup

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — The Lady Rebels have been atop the Mountain West Conference for 12 months. Now they'll have their first rematch with the team they beat to get there.

UNLV (15-2 overall, 5-0 Mountain West) hosts New Mexico (10-7, 2-2) Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Cox Pavilion. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1. Tip-off is 6 p.m.

The two teams have had some of the league's best battles in recent years and have split their annual two-game series for the past four seasons.

UNLV and New Mexico have two of the conference's top three offenses, scoring 77.9 points per game and 73.4, respectively. The squads are led by two of the nation's top centers. UNLV's Desi-Rae Young and UNM's Shaiquel McGruder will battle in the paint as their team's top scorers and rebounders.

Last year in Las Vegas, Essence Booker scored a career-high 31 points to lead the Lady Rebels over the Lobos, 85-79, in a game that featured 11 lead changes. UNLV forged ahead in the third period as Alyssa Durazo-Frescas hit four 3-pointers in the period.

UNLV is 5-0 in conference play for the first time since the 1993-94 season as a member of the Big West Conference. The Lady Rebels most recently swept Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State on a three-game road trip to start the new year.

#MakingHerMark

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Title IX, the Mountain West is continuing its #MakingHerMark initiative with a Trailblazers Spotlight Series and promotional t-shirt campaign. Prior the start of the 2021-2022 sports seasons, female student-athletes from across the league created the hashtag #MakingHerMark. The hashtag promotes the unity of Mountain West female student-athletes and their influence in college athletics.

The 2022-2023 Trailblazers Spotlight Series will be produced by the Mountain West Network and showcased at all women's championships during the 2022-2023 academic year.

During the 2021-2022 academic year, MW female student-athletes wore EMPOWER t-shirts throughout the year to showcase the excitement, resilience, and overall impact of Mountain West women's sports.

This year, the t-shirt campaign continues with the slogan IM POSSIBLE. The t-shirt commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the landmark federal law signed in 1972 that prohibits gender discrimination in educational programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance. The message behind the t-shirt is to showcase women's impact on college athletics over the last 50 years. IMPOSSIBLE is a tribute to the strength, courage, and perseverance every woman has within themselves. Anything is possible when you put your heart, mind, and soul into achieving your best self.
