SAN MARCOS, Texas (UNLVRebels.com) – Junior
McKenzi Hall and the UNLV women's golf team positioned themselves in contention on their respective leaderboards following Sunday's opening two rounds of Texas State's Jim West Challenge at Kissing Tree Golf Club (Par 72, 6,010 yards).
Hall, who followed up her first-round 4-under 68 with a second-round 5-under 67, is just one shot off the lead in a tie for second at 9-under through 36 holes. She knocked in eight of her nine birdies on the day on the front nine of each round, while also adding an eagle on hole No. 3 in the first round.
Forming a trio of Rebel individuals inside the top 15 alongside Hall, graduate student
Maria Jose Martinez (-5) and sophomore
Thienna Huynh (-3) are tied for 12th and 15th, respectively. Martinez matched her career-low round with a 6-under 66 in round two and Huynh had a season-low 3-under 69 in round one.
Behind the Scarlet & Gray's individual leaders, UNLV sits just two shots off the team lead in a two-way tie for fourth at 13-under. After shooting a first-round 4-under, the Rebels recorded a season-low round of 9-under in the second round.
Houston, SMU and the host Bobcats are each tied for first place at 15-under. Oklahoma's Savannah Barber leads the individual field at 10-under for the one-shot advantage over Hall and three other competitors.
