Santana Breaks Shot Put Outdoor Program Record

SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV track & field program wrapped up the final day of the Aztec Invitational with 13 personal bests Saturday evening at the Aztec Sports Deck. 

Sophomore trio Natalia Ruiz, Jaida Lyles and Santana led the Rebels at the Aztec Invitational, claiming first in the women's 5000m run, 3000m steeplechase and shot put, respectively. 

The Scarlet & Gray finished eighth out of 26 teams. They competed against Mountain West foes Boise State, Air Force, Fresno State, UNR, San Jose State and host San Diego State, as well as other teams across the Pac-12 and the Big 12. 

ON THE TRACK
- Distance standout Ruiz claimed the women's 5000m run title with a career best time of 16:33.53.  
- Lyles placed first in the women's 3000m steeplechase with a personal best time of 11:51.30. 
- Senior LaKyla Yazzie led the Rebels in the women's 1500m run with a personal best time of 4:41.60m, followed by freshman Taylor Gauthier with a career best time of 5:56.74.
- Junior Taylor Shorter finished strong in the women's 100m hurdles with a personal best time of 15.16, freshman Noelani Mendoza followed with a personal best of her own (16.93). 
- Freshman Jana Lakner paced the Scarlet & Gray in the women's 400m dash with a time of 55.59, followed by junior Endya Scott with a 57.68 and sophomore AnnaKay Maitland with a time 59.84.
- Sophomore Shakeria Bowra led the Rebels in the women's 100m dash with a personal best time of 12.09, followed by sophomore Aja Melo-Powell with a time of 12.65. Sophomore Keyona Burrell finished with a 13.18, followed by the freshman duo Ella Hagman and Noelani Mendoza who finished with times of 13.19 and 13.52, respectively. 
- Lyles grabbed another personal best in the women's 800m run with a time of 2:21.70. 
- Graduate student Alia Scott placed eighth in the women's 400m hurdles with a season best time of 1:00.66.
- Lakner placed in the top 30 of the women's 200m dash with a time of 24.79, followed by Endya Scott with a 25.08 and Melo-Powell (25.54).

ON THE FIELD
- Santana took the women's shot put title with a personal best and program record mark of 17.24m, followed by graduate student Cassidy Osborne-Butler who placed sixth with a personal best mark of 15.27m.
- Osborne-Butler had another sixth-place finish and personal best mark of 57.67m in the women's hammer throw. 
- Sophomore Erin Thompson took sixth in the women's high jump with a mark of 1.65m. 
- Freshman Camryn Harris competed in the women's long jump and triple jump and finished with a final mark of 4.62m and 10.16m, respectively. 
- Sophomore Roxene Simpson had a personal best in the women's discus throw with a mark of 43.75m.

UP NEXT: The Rebels will travel to the Lone Star State for the Texas Relays set for Wednesday, March 29 through Saturday, April 1.
