LAS VEGAS (UNLVrebels.com) – The UNLV women's track & field team are set to open the New Year up north in the next couple days, competing in the Spokane Showcase on Friday, Jan. 12. The team will travel to Spokane, WA for the meet, hosted by The Podium.
The Rebels will take flight in 12 different events during the Spokane Showcase, bringing both track student-athletes and field student-athletes for the day-long event. Both the track & field events will separately start at 10 a.m., the final event for track kicking off at 4:35 p.m. and the final field event taking place at 2:30 p.m.
UNLV will feature six student-athletes during the five field events,
Camryn Harris being the only competitor for the Scarlet & Gray participating in multiple events. The sophomore will first take off in the women's long jump at 10 a.m. before later competing in the women's triple jump at 1:30 p.m. Harris will be joined in the triple jump with
Mackenzie Okonta, with
Madelynn Wattles participating in the women's weight throw at 10 a.m.
Erin Thompson and
Grace Cunningham will represent the Rebels in the women's high jump at 1:30 a.m.,
Roxene Simpson concluding the team's field events at the Spokane Showcase at 2:30 p.m. with the women's shot put.
Okonta will also hit the runway for UNLV with the women's 60m hurdles, the qualifying round taking place at 10 a.m. Through there she'll fight for a spot in the preliminary round at 11:25 a.m., with the event's final set to start at 12:25 p.m. The next round of races are set to begin at 10:40 a.m. with the women's 60m hosting five different Rebels in the same round structure as the 60m hurdles. The UNLV student-athletes competing in the previously mentioned event are
Endya Scott,
Kennedi Porter,
Sadia Green,
Sophia Alexander and
Jana Lakner.
LaKyla Yazzie will represent the distance team as the lone Rebel in the women's mile, the fifth-year competing in the event at 1:00 p.m. The duo of Scott and Lakner will compete in their second event of the day in the women's 400m at 1:30 p.m., the trio of
Aitza Romero,
Jaida Lyles and
Abigail Danlag later in the day during the women's 800m at 2:50 p.m. Porter, Alexander and Green are set to get back on the track at 3:20 p.m. in the women's 200m, the Rebels rounding out the Spokane Showcase with the women's 4x400m relay at 4:25 p.m. The team will have two relays competing in the event, the first squad consisting of Scott, Porter, Green and Lakner. UNLV's second relay team will include Alexander, Romero, Lyles and Yazzie.
The Spokane Showcase will serve as UNLV's second indoor meet of the 2023-24 season, the Rebels rewriting the program's record book at the Sharon-Colyear Danville Season Opener at the beginning of December. The team only took four distance runners to the east coast for the Boston meet, making the Showcase their biggest event of the season.
