Illia Maksymchuk, seeded fifth, upset the top seed Friday to advance to the singles final of the inaugural Mountain West Qualifier being staged this week at the Darling Tennis Center.
Maksymchuk, a sophomore from Ukraine, needed three sets to get by Sergi Mico Fenollar of Utah State, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
In doubles play, the Rebels' remaining duo, fell to second-seeded David Martirsian and Mohammad Alkotop, 6-1, 6-4.
In the pilot year of this new championship format, each NCAA Division 1 AQ-eligible conference will host a tournament to designate one singles player and one doubles pair on both the men's and women's side to represent them in the ITA Conference Masters tournament, which is one of four qualifying pathways to this year's NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships.
