LUBBOCK, Texas – Coming off of a strong day-one performance on Friday at the Jarvis Scott Open, the UNLV track & field team kicked off the second and final day of competition on Saturday morning. Hosted by Texas Tech University, the Rebels were highlighted by several strong performances that included a top-five all-time race in UNLV history.
Kennedi Porter cemented her name in UNLV's record book in the women's 200m, catapulting herself with the third-fastest time in program history on a 23.44 mark. That time was also a personal best for the junior, slotting as the fastest time in the Mountain West prior to the finalization of this weekend's results. She finished fifth overall in the event.
The Scarlet & Gray had several other strong performances on the track, including a bronze-medal spot in the women's mile by
Natalia Ruiz. After breaking the program record in the event last week at the New Mexico Collegiate Challenge, the junior followed up with a near-identical time of 4:53.72 in the event on Saturday.
The Rebels also featured a quad of strong performances in the first portion of the women's 200m, earning a pair of top-10 finishes.
Shakeira Bowra led the group with a best time of 24.24 for seventh-place overall,
Jaydea Carter right behind her at eighth on a 24.29 final time.
Kaelin Gowdy and
Endya Scott also picked up best times in the event on Saturday morning.
UNLV's final highlight of the weekend came way of the women's 4x400m relay, the group posting the best time for the program this indoor season. The team of Scott, Porter, Gowdy and
Chinyere Okoro combined for a 3:46.22 final time, good for tenth overall in the event.
The conclusion of the Jarvis Scott Open ends the final meet before the Mountain West Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, slated to kick off on Thursday, Feb. 22. The meet will run through Saturday, Feb. 24 over in Albuquerque, N.M. You can get updates on all-thing Rebels via their

DAY ONE
After a strong performance last weekend at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, the UNLV track & field team took course for a second-straight weekend of competing, this time at the Jarvis Scott Open. Hosted by Texas Tech University, the Rebels kicked off the first day of the meet on Friday with several best times.
Junior
Kennedi Porter led the Scarlet & Gray with a career-best time in the women's 60m, finishing ninth overall in the event with a final time of 7.38. Porter earned her time and placing after pushing past the qualifying round of the event, winning her heat on a 7.44 time just a few hours earlier.
She wasn't the only Rebel to push past the qualifying round in the event, Chineyre Okoro also reaching the semifinal round after winning her heat in the qualifying round and improving .01 seconds in her second run of the day.
AnnaKay Maitland was the third and final UNLV student-athlete to go over the qualifying round in the event, picking up a win as well in her heat.
The Scarlet & Gray had one more student-athlete earn their way past the qualifying round of their respected event,
Jaydea Carter achieving the feat in the women's 60m hurdles. Carter picked up her honor with a personal-best time in the event, posting a 8.42 final time in the first round to win her heat. She wasn't the only best time that was posted in the event for UNLV,
Delaysia Allen also earned her personal record during her race as well.
The Rebels had one more student-athlete eclipse a personal mark,
Kaelin Gowdy posting a new best time in the women's 400m. Gowdy's time in the event showcased a three-second time drop, breaking her personal record originally set last week in New Mexico.
The second and final day of the Jarvis Scott Open is set to kick off at 8 a.m. PT on Saturday, Feb. 10, the first event being the women's shot put. The next event to follow will be the women's triple jump before the running events start at 9 a.m. PT with the women's 200m.
