LIHUE, Hawai'i (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV men's golf shot a 2-under 286 to climb into 10th place after Thursday's opening round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, which is being hosted by Hawai'i at the Ocean Course at Hōkūala (Par 72, 7,156 yards).
Senior
Caden Fioroni led the way for the Rebels on the day with a 4-under 68 to position himself inside the individual top-10 in a tie for eighth. Fioroni, who had four of his five birdies on the front nine, is four shots off the lead after he finished at 3-under or better for the third time in his last four rounds.
Contributing their own par-or-better rounds for the Scarlet & Gray, junior
Trevor Lewis added a 1-under 71 to move into a tie for 34th and senior
Yuki Moriyama's even-par 72 has him tied for 50th. Additionally, the Rebels saw freshman
Hogan Park (+2), who is competing as an individual, sophomore
Wyatt Plattner and senior
Ben Sawaia (+10) end their opening 18 holes of the event tied for 71st, tied for89th and in 120th, respectively.
Long Beach State claimed the day-one lead in the team standings with a 15-under 273 for a 5-shot advantage over Arizona (-10), Grand Canyon (-10) and Washington State (-10) in a three-way tie for second. The Wildcats' Yannick Malik and San Diego State's Justin Hastings are vying for position atop the individual leaderboard, with Malik's 7-under 65 giving him a one-shot lead over Hastings (-6).
