HUMBLE, Texas (UNLVRebels.com) – Senior
Yuki Moriyama took the day-one lead as the UNLV men's golf team ended Monday's opening two rounds of the All-American Intercollegiate tied for second on the Tournament Course at Golf Club of Houston (Par 72, 7,425 yards). Three Rebels also started off the individual tournament on the Member Course (Par 72, 7,508 yards).
Moriyama, who holds a one-shot lead at 4-under, improved his first-round score by six shots with a 5-under 67 in a bogey-free second round. He finished the day dropping in five of his eight birdies on his last 18 holes.
Joining Moriyama in the top 5 for the Rebels, senior
Caden Fioroni (+1) is tied for fifth after he also lowered his score from the first round with a second-round 2-under 71 and team-leading nine birdies.
After combining to shoot an 8-over through 36 holes, the Rebels find themselves within four shots of Sam Houston at 4-under going into the final round. The Scarlet & Gray lineup also includes sophomore
Wyatt Plattner (+5) in a tie for 34th, junior
Trevor Lewis (+9) in a tie for 64th and senior
Ben Sawaia (+12) in a tie for 88th.
Leading UNLV's individuals, sophomore
Brett Sawaia (+5) is tied for 18th, while sophomores
Billy Smith (+4) and
Inigo Izuzquiza (+8) follow in a tie for 23rd and 26th, respectively.
