TUCSON, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men's golf team surged to the day-two lead after posting a program single-round low for a conference event with an 18-under 270 Monday at the Mountain West Championship on the Catalina Course at OMNI Tucson National Resort (Par 72, 7,194 yards).
It topped the previous program 18-hole low at a league championship of 271, which also happened in the second round at both the 2009 and 2010 MW Championships.
SECOND-ROUND SURGE: Every individual in the Rebels' five-man lineup tallied a par-or-better scorecard. Contributing a pair of 6-under 66 efforts, junior
Zach Little went bogey free for his personal season-low round and senior
Brett Sawaia had a career-low round. Adding more under-par performances were senior
Wyatt Plattner with a 4-under 68 and junior
Mason Snyder with a 2-under 70. Senior
Trevor Lewis followed up his first-round 5-under 67 with an even-par 72.
In total, the Scarlet & Gray dropped in 25 birdies, including a birdie from all five players on the par-5 No. 2 hole. Little and Platter led the team with six birdies apiece, while Sawaia eagled the 15th hole.
REBEL ROUNDUP: Individually, four Rebels are in the top 15. Little (-9) jumped into a tie for fourth, Sawaia (-6) moved into a tie for eighth, Lewis and Plattner (-5) each sit tied for 13th and Snyder (E) is tied for 35th.
DAY-TWO LEADERBOARD: UNLV climbed four spots with a 36-hole score of 27-under 549 for a one-shot lead over Grand Canyon in second. San Diego State's Tyler Kowack and Harry Takis share the individual lead at 10-under 134 for the tournament.
QUOTABLE: "The team played a good round of golf today. Individually, all five guys had a goal of going out and putting together a good, solid under-par score. That's what they did, so it was a good day. We got off to a good start, which really helps out here. Getting off to a better start today put us in position for a good round. There are plenty of birdie holes out here, but you've got to be careful on some holes and be smart in a few spots. As a team (everyone) chipped in."
